The 11th hole at Westerham Golf Club, known as the “eye of the storm” is a signature feature of this renowned course. This par three hole is characterised by it’s challenging layout, where golfers must navigate a downhill shot through a narrow corridor of tall pine trees to reach a small green. The green is strategically protected by bunkers at the front and left, adding to the hole’s difficulty and requiring precise shot-making.

The history of this hole, and indeed the entire course, is deeply intertwined with the events of the Great Storm of 1987. This storm, which brought winds of up to 120mph, caused widespread destruction across the South East of England. However, it also inadvertently created the ideal conditions for a golf course, as vast areas were cleared of timber. Westerham Golf Club was established on this transformed landscape with the 11th hole serving as a lasting reminder of the storm’s impact.

The painting of the 11th hole captures its vibrant essence, utilising acrylic and ink to depict the sunlit driveway and the surrounding trees. The artwork highlights the natural beauty and the challenging nature of this iconic hole, making it a beloved subject for both artists and golfers alike.
