The painting is inspired on the life of Joseph, son of Jacob, who is at the right side, wearing his iconic multicoloured coat, vibrant and dazzling in its array of hues. Surrounding him are various vignettes from his life, intricately woven into the background.
To the left, a deep, dark pit represents the moment his brothers threw him in, symbolising betrayal and despair. Nearby, a scene shows Potiphar’s wife reaching out to grab Joseph’s cloak, illustrating her attempt to seduce him and the ensuing false accusation.
In the middle ground, the majestic Nike River flows serenely, with the grand pyramids of Egypt rising in the background, signifying Joseph’s journey to Egypt. Next to it, a dreamlike sequence unfolds: the sun, moon and eleven stars bowing to Joseph, symbolising his prophetic dreams of dominion over his family.
In the centre, below the moon, two scenes from the prison are depicted. One shows Joseph interpreting the dreams of the baker and the wine cup servant, with their respective symbols -a piece of bread and grapes- highlighted. To the left, a cup, representing the one supposedly stolen by his little brother Benjamin, is another layer of Joseph’s dramatic life.
Having DREAMS from God and the favouritism of his father towards him amongst his brothers were the reason of his unfortunate life but GOD was always in control, turning his misfortune into blessing…
